On Bones is a book of black & white photography.

My concept for this series was to document commonplace street scenes using a highly specific moment in time as a point of reference. I travelled for six weeks, through five continents, finishing at midnight on New Year’s Eve, 1999. Documenting the end of the millennium is an absurd proposition, so my plan was to embrace randomness and chaos. Photography is a rational medium, which might explain its popularity with dentists and accountants who enjoy dependable mathematics, physics and chemistry. So, in the spirit of introducing chaos to the order, I simply photographed whomever happened to cross my path in six carelessly chosen corners of the world. The moment my shutter clicked, these ordinary strangers became representative of all of us. They became my gods of the unsung. Twenty years later, the dull beauty to be found in an ordinary life still moves me. Bodies and gaits and unconscious gestures, inherited through generations, across centuries and hundreds of centuries. But people don’t have time to ponder such fripperies. They mostly threw me a filthy look or swore dramatically in a language I didn’t need to understand to get the gist. The stranger stealing their image unexpectedly. And I was young when I took these pictures, and like them, now I am not.

On Bones features excerpts from Killing Time by UK poet laureate Simon Armitage.

The book has been designed by Stuart Geddes and is offset printed to exacting specifications in tritone.

‘In 1999 Jon took off around the world to document the end of the millennium with black and white film. I hope someday people see these photos and understand they are every bit as important as his work in the ocean that is so revered.”  Andrew Kidman from the book Beyond Litmus
